(WTNH)–Once again, UConn center Amida Brimah can proclaim himself the fastest UConn men’s basketball player in the world.
The seven-foot, 240-pound center won UConn’s annual “Husky Run,” which is a 3.1 mile trip around campus. He finished first with a time of 21:59, which was over a minute slower than his first-place finish as a sophomore in 2014. Back then, a stunned Kevin Ollie told reporters that it was probably “the first time in history a big man won.”
Big men dominated this race, as freshman forward Vance Jackson (6-8) came in second with a time of 22:07.
Alarmingly, head coach Kevin Ollie finished third (22:38). The first guard to cross the finish line was walk-on Mike Noyes (23:18), followed by freshman Alterique Gilbert (24:19).
“This is how we start our season. Just competing,” Brimah said. “This is like a mental competition, and whoever is the most mentally tough wins the whole thing.”
“That was great, to see our bigs. I’m a little disappointed not to see no guards up there, but we’ll get those guys in tip-top shape,” Ollie said. “But it was great to see the bigs out there pushing themselves.”
